Discovering COVA AND CSLE

The COVA (choice (C), ownership (O), and voice (V) through authentic (A) learning opportunities)(Harapnuik, 2018) and CSLE (Creating Significant Learning Environments (CSLE) (Harapnuik, 2018) – An integrated approach to creating flexible, engaging and effective learning environments. Models are pedagogical approaches that seek to transform how teaching and learning are done. These models focus on promoting active participation by students, fostering their commitment and autonomy.

In the COVA model, connections create meaningful links between content and student experiences. The aim is for students to find meaning and relevance in their learning, establishing connections with the real world. Opportunities are focused on creating environments conducive to learning where students can explore, experiment, and discover for themselves. Value is related to the importance of students seeing the purpose and usefulness of their learning, which motivates their commitment and effort. Finally, students take an active role in their learning, taking responsibility, and making decisions about addressing challenges.

The CSLE model also focuses on providing meaningful connections to students, academic, and social support, creating a trusting environment where they feel safe to share their ideas and doubts. Freedom of expression implies allowing students to express themselves and actively participate in learning, encouraging creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. Giving them freedom and autonomy empowers them to make informed and responsible decisions.

The COVA and CSLE models aim to transform learning into a more active, meaningful, and personalized experience for students creating connections, and autonomy, and promoting support and freedom of expression, these models seek to enhance student engagement and success in their educational process. By implementing these models, more prosperous and more meaningful educational experiences can be created for students
